BSH Providing Take-Out Meals For Dock Workers

The Bermuda Sailors’ Home [BSH] is providing take-out meals for dock workers over the next five weeks as they continue to work during the Covid-19 pandemic.

A spokesperson said, “Bermuda’s dock workers have been working tirelessly through this pandemic day and night to provide Bermuda with all the food and goods needed in our everyday life without interruption.

“To recognize their efforts, the Bermuda Sailors’ Home, a local charity, has set out to support this aspect of the Bermuda maritime industry by providing specially prepared take-out meals for dock workers over the next five weeks.”

Chairman of the Bermuda Sailors Home Bob Greig said, “We want to thank the dock workers for all of the hard work they do, especially during this period of crisis and uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 virus.

“Bermuda is 100% dependent on feeder vessels that provide a critical service to the island. Our dock workers have been diligently working to ensure that essential food and other vital supplies reach our community without interruptions.”

The spokesperson said, “The charity will treat the workers to meals specially prepared by Mad Hatters restaurant as a token of recognition and gratitude. Traditionally, the charitable purpose of Bermuda Sailors’ Home is to ensure the well-being together with providing a place of rest for the seafarers who land upon Bermudian shores.

“At this time, the crew members are not permitted to leave their vessels and Bermuda Sailors’ Home has decided to direct their support to Bermuda’s dock industry workers.

“Warren Jones, Chief Executive Officer of Stevedoring Services Limited noted that this is a very welcome surprise. The stevedores have a thankless job and carry out their responsibilities quietly and in anonymity. We are so thankful to the Bermuda Sailors’ Home for thinking of us. It is a fantastic shot in the arm at a very difficult time.”

Mr. Greig said, “From the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, dock workers all over the world have been drastically affected and the entire maritime industry will not be the same.

“Once our island is open again to seafarers from visiting ships, Bermuda Sailors Home will be ready to serve them whilst also adapting to whatever our new normal might be.”

The spokesperson said, “Bermuda Sailors’ Home is located at 22 Richmond Road in Hamilton and provides a centre for rest and recreation to seafarers. Last year, a satellite centre was opened in Dockyard catering to thousands of cruise ship crew staff during the summer months.”
