Rotary Youth Launch Initiative To Help Seniors

Seven young ladies from the Hamilton Rotary Interact Club will be spending their summer connecting with seniors in an effort to provide support during the Covid-19 pandemic.

A spokesperson said, “A group of dedicated Rotary teens in the Hamilton Rotary Interact Club will be spending their summer connecting with seniors in an effort to provide encouragement and support.

“Seven young ladies ranging in age from 16 to 18, comprised of current high school students, graduates from high school, and university freshmen, have made contact with Rotary seniors and have devised a script containing questions and topics seniors would enjoy discussing.

“All senior gems are former Rotarians who may be homebound or unable to mingle as they did previously due to the pandemic which is amongst us.

“The students have held Zoom meetings with Rotary Interact advisers and are ready to launch the initiative.

“Any needs requested by seniors will be referred to the Rotarians, who will supply requests. These may include collecting medicine from the pharmacy, picking up a case of water, or mailing a letter to a friend.

“The Rotary Interact Club has been in existence for five years. It was renewed in 2015, having been introduced to Bermuda by past president Rotarian Kirk Kitson and the late Rotarian Jay Bluck 45 years ago.

“The students have been actively engaged in community service, and 14 Rotary youth Interacters attended the National High School Model United Nations Convention, where several presented.

“They were sponsored by Hamilton Rotary, St George’s Rotary, Pembroke Rotary, Ernst and Young, Renaissance Reinsurance Company, Lindos Family Foods, Private Rotarian donors, friends of Rotary both locally and from the U.S. and London, and from The District 7230 Rotary Clubs in New York.

“The Senior Outreach Board currently holds remote Zoom meetings, and although many of the students are housebound, they still see a need to actively engage in community service.

“Coordinators of the Seniors Outreach Program are past president and BHS graduate Nadhiri Simons Worrel, and Macarena Perez Bettini, a Rotary exchange student from Chile who graduated from Mount St. Agnes Academy.

“Other members of the Advisory Board of the Seniors Outreach Program are Kree Dunn, Aleah Clarke, Sari Smith, Ianna Caines, and Veronica DeGraff.

“They uphold the Rotary motto: service above self and work as a cohesive team serving those who helped to lay the foundation for Rotary in Bermuda.

“They use the telephone to connect, inspire, and encourage.”
