During the midst of this lockdown due to the global pandemic, there is apparently an event called ‘Moto Purge’ being promoted on social media inviting people on motorbikes to come out at midnight with the intention of ‘pulling chase,’ and the police said they wish “to make it absolutely clear, anyone found to be engaging in this event, will be arrested, prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and their vehicle seized.”
A police spokesperson said, “The Bermuda Police Service [BPS], is aware of an event called ‘Moto Purge’, supposedly set to take place during the Shelter in Place period and being promoted on social media.
“The invitation is for individuals to be out on motorbikes between the hours of 12:00 midnight and 1:00am with the intention of ‘pulling chase.’
“The BPS reminds that Bermuda is currently under Shelter in Place Orders, which dictate that there is a curfew in effect from 7:00p.m. to 7:00a.m. and places a restriction on road traffic.
“In fact, Section 13 of the Emergency Powers [COVID-19 Shelter in Place] Regulations 2020 states:
“No person shall drive or ride a vehicle of any description [including a bicycle], on any public or private road during the curfew, except for purposes permitted by these Regulations.
“The purported ‘Moto Purge’ is not one such purpose.
“The BPS wishes to make it absolutely clear, anyone found to be engaging in this event, will be arrested, prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and their vehicle seized.
“We urge that you let common sense be your guide.”
