The police plan to have “officers in plain clothes” going into premises across the island, with the police saying it is about “gaining compliance for all our safety.”
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, the Assistant Commissioner of Police said, “One of the things we probably will do, one of the tactics we will employ, is we are going to have some officers in plain clothes who will be going to be going around, and going into premises all across the Island, just to see what they can see.
“Because sometimes it could be that people are suddenly getting their act together when they hear the police are coming in, and so we’re going to have some officers working in plain clothes as well, just to see if people are actually doing what they’re supposed to be doing.
“Again, this is about compliance, it’s not about tricking people, it’s not about tripping people up, it’s about gaining compliance for all our safety.”
This comes as island’s confirmed Covid-19 cases have been increasing — with 10 new cases announced today alone — and officials have recently made changes, including, but not limited to, introducing fines – $500 for the first offence and $1,000 for the second offence upon conviction — for “persons not wearing a mask in accordance with the law”, and changing the closing time for bars to midnight.
